Misplaced affections
Newscasts in recent days have told of two events: one bizarre, and one tragic.
Guess which story has generated the loudest outcry?
One story, in print and television reports, told the tragic story of a senior
United Nations peacekeeper, a General, who has been all but destroyed emotionally
and professionally by the frustration of watching hundreds of thousands
of innocent, helpless civilians slaughtered in a senseless genocide in which
his superiors where unwilling to intervene and stop.
The second story told of FBI and armed animal control officers attempting
to track down the "perpetrators" of an internet hoax, university
graduate students who mounted a "bonsaikitten" site that featured
false images of "kittens in square bottles" as a ghoulish prank.
Guess which story was largely ignored, "compartmentalized" by
a public beaten nearly senseless in the never-ending barrage of media-channeled
death and despair?
Guess which story did enrage the sensibilities of thousands of viewers,
and has resulted in the intervention of Federal Bureau of Investigation
agents and the waste of substantial man-hours and tax dollars?
Yer right .. its the "faux bottle kitties" in a stretch ...
Its a bizarre world, ain't it?
